A couple of weeks ago we posted a list of our favorite Paleo chicken soup recipes. Of course chicken soup is a nice and warm winter staple, but some of you may have been left wondering “what about the beef?”

Top 10 Paleo Beef Stew Recipes

1. Slow Cooker Beef Stew with Cranberries and Rosemary

Beef Stew by Phoenix Helix This delicious stew from food blogger Eileen is savory, healthy and warm. Radishes, especially when slow-cooked, act as a great potato substitute. Plentiful use of rosemary adds a special, aromatic touch. The cranberries make it slightly sweet, but don’t put them in the slow cooker at the beginning with the rest of the ingredients; they get added in later. Overall this recipe is a healthy stew with classic veggies and is very easy to make, with straightforward instructions. It’s true that it’s hard to go wrong with a slow cooker but Eileen makes the process foolproof. (Thanks to Eileen for allowing use of her photo from her blog, Phoenix Helix.)

2. Greek Beef Stew

Greek Beef Stew from The Clothes Make the Girl Melissa used a beef shoulder to make this super easy adaption from a great Greek food cookbook. Tomato paste and balsamic vinegar intensify the flavor of this stew – and that’s even before you get a fresh herbal mix of rosemary, thyme and sage! Bay leaves and two whole cinnamon sticks round out this amazing stew and leave a warming taste in your mouth. Melissa teaches you how to “deglaze” the pan; I won’t give it away but this is an important technique for anyone who is a novice in the kitchen and she makes the process simple to learn. 3. Sweet and Smoky Beef Stew

Beef Stew from Paleo In PDX Here’s a great Paleo beef stew recipe that doesn’t require a crock pot. Alisa seemingly created this off the top of her head – now that’s what I call improvisational skills! The bacon lends some grease to cook the beef in (so no need for oil) and even after that, there’s still some left in which to sauté those veggies. How flavorful! The only thing you need to keep in mind before starting is that this requires a 3-hour simmer. I’m sure it will be worth it, but make sure you plan ahead and don’t leave this recipe to start when you’re already feeling a bit hungry. (Thanks to Alisa for letting us use her photo from Paleo in PDX.)

4. Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free Beef and Butternut Squash Stew

Beef Butternut Squash Stew from Once a Month Meals The team at Once A Month Meals makes a great point about stews, which I have failed to mention until now. Like curries, they taste even better the next day! This recipe is one that you’ll want to make a giant batch of, and you can eat it the next day or even freeze it to re-heat in the future for an on-the-go lunch or leftovers dinner. I’m especially a fan of butternut squash, which is full of fiber and absorbs the flavors of the sauce and herbs. It already tastes so good on its own; include it in this recipe and you have a greatly enhanced Paleo beef stew! (Photo permission granted from the team at Once a Month Meals. Thanks!)

5. Beef & Pumpkin Stew

Beef Pumpkin Stew from Meatified Rach from Meatified laments that pumpkin season flies by way too quickly and she often misses the chance to take advantage of it. Her great solution is to keep a few cans of pumpkin puree on hand and it certainly pays off when she wants to make this yummy Paleo beef and pumpkin stew! Added to beef stock, this works as a tasty thickener and poblano peppers offset the sweetness with a hot and spicy element. This recipe doesn’t require as much time as others on the list, so if you’re looking for something 30 minutes or less, this is a great option! (Thanks to Rach from Meatified for always letting us use photos from her blog!)

6. Orange Cinnamon Beef Stew

Orange Cinnamon Beef Stew from the Healthy Foodie As the title gives away, orange and cinnamon are the special components that set apart this beautiful beef stew from Sonia, The Healthy Foodie. She starts by searing the beef in a Dutch oven with healthy coconut oil. She then cooks the veggies there and deglazes the pot with the orange juice, mixing in all those tasty flavors with the sauce of the stew. She finishes it off with a delectable array of herbs and cooks it for a long time until the meat is soft and tender. She serves her dish alongside spiralized rutabaga; spiralized zucchini would work well here too if you want some noodles as accompaniment. (Sonia, The Healthy Foodie allowed us to reproduce her photo here. Thanks again!)

7. Stew for You (or Two)

Stew for You by the Domestic Man Besides using ingredients that compliment each other and add to its uniqueness (such as nutmeg, sweet potatoes and tarragon), The Domestic Man succeeds in delivering enough detail so that you don’t miss any of his tips and tricks for making this amazing stew. Don’t be overwhelmed by the length of instruction – this is one of those go-all-out recipes perfect for a winter dinner party (the ingredients render enough for 8 servings!). It will take some time but no one who tries it will fail to notice your efforts. I love how he includes the difficulty level, like you’re about to hike up a hill. It may be a bit challenging, but you can certainly learn a lot here, especially the extra info about vacuum seal cooking. (Photo permission granted from Russ, The Domestic Man. Thank you!)

8. Mega-Veggie Freezer Beef Stew

If you’re the kind of person who likes to pre-make or pre-prep your meals on the weekend so you can reduce your stress and increase your free time during the week, this is the recipe for you! The idea is that you can chop up the ingredients and make a few Ziploc bags ready-to-go, storing them in the freezer. Erica gives some great tips for novice crock-pot users in the introduction to this recipe. She uses arrowroot powder to make a semblance of gravy. Although admittedly not as thick as using wheat flour, it’s a much healthier option! And anyway, the great flavor combination of the ingredients in this recipe more than make up for a lack of thickness in the sauce.

9. Ginger Beef Stew (with Slow-Cooker option)

This Asian-influenced beef stew has ginger, one of my favorite ingredients. It always feels like it cleanses my body. It’s super healthy and adds a spicy-but-not-hot flavor to any dish. Add a bit of cayenne pepper and sesame seeds sprinkled on top, and this beef stew goes to the top of my list to try. This recipe calls for potatoes, but remember to make it with sweet potatoes in order to keep it Paleo.

10. Curry Beef Stew

Here’s a delicious Thai beef stew that has ginger, but also spicy-and-hot ingredients like red curry paste and red chili flakes. Garam masala is a traditional Indian ingredient, but as far as I’m concerned, the more Asian influences, the better! The instructions are very simple, so as long as you’ve got some Thai ingredients in the cupboard (lemongrass, fish sauce and coconut milk are key) then you’re all set. And if not, it’s a good chance to go out and discover these – they are so tasty and crucial in Thai/Asian cooking, and you will end up using them a lot.

Eileen @ Phoenix Helix - January 10

Thanks so much for choosing my stew as your #1. 🙂 I’m actually making it this weekend, with venison meat this time. I’m lucky enough to have a friend who is a hunter. Here’s to healthy comfort food!
