Making Real Vanilla Extract


  • 1 liter bottle of vodka or other spirits
  • 30 vanilla beans (can use more if you want)


  1. Pour out 1/3 of the vodka from the bottle.
  2. With a sharp knife, slice each vanilla bean lengthwise in half so that the black “caviar” is visible.
  3. Cut the long pieces into 2-inch long shorter pieces.
  4. Place the vanilla bean pieces into the vodka.
  5. Shake well.
  6. Leave in a dark cupboard for 2 months (or up to 4-5 months).
