Looking to make your own chai spice mix to use for hot drinks or to sprinkle into dishes? Then this recipe is for you!

Indian Masala Chai

Everyone in India seems to have their own special family blend for Masala Chai, and there are lots of blends for sale in the US (e.g., this one on Amazon). I bought a small amount from Shashi in Udaipur, India, but I wanted to make my own as well (for fun and for when I run out).

The Spices in Masala Chai

Here are the spices I used for my mix (there are lots of different possibilities, but these are some of the basic ones). Feel free to Pin the photo below! (There are links to purchase the individual spices in the recipe box below.)

Making Masala Chai (Tea)

Masala Chai is often not Paleo, so here’s a Paleo coconut masala chai tea recipe you can make with this masala chai spice blend.

And if you’re in a hurry, then you can make a super fast masala chai (tea) by making black tea (from a teabag with hot water), adding a pinch of masala chai spice into the hot tea, and then adding coconut or almond milk.

What a fantastic visit you must have had. The colours, sounds and scents must be amazing. I’ve never tasted chai before so I’ll have a go!

Thanks Evee – let me know what you think!

    Chai means tea.

    Masala means Spice/s/Spice Mix

So by saying You never had Chai before is implying you never had tea.

I am not trying to offend but It is just funny.

But I really hope you enjoy it and I will give this ver. A try too.

When I was deployed to Qatar I had the most amazing chai I’ve ever tasted! Thank you for this recipe. Love the pictures of India and I’m so glad you had such a nice time. India isn’t considered a vacation spot to most people but, I think the people, culture and food can’t be beat. I’m hoping to make it there someday.

Thanks Mandy – I hope you make it there because it is really quite amazing!

I make my own blend also. I have two spice shops here in Fort Collins Colorado and my favorite shop is Savory (you can purchase herbs and spices online). One of the things that I add to my mix is powdered honey and powdered coconut milk. The tea part is trickier. I am a bit of a tea snob (not really). I’ve been reviewing tea’s for tea companies for years and powdered tea and tea bags are pretty blah (dust). A good chai blend can be added to a brewed whole leaf tea with greater flavor. I prefer an Indian Assam with good malty taste. Yum! YouTube and Steepster are great educators for tea novices.

I just made your masala chai mix. I’m not sure if I have a stronger powdered ginger or if we are more sensitive to the spice but we found it quite spicy with only 2 tsp of ginger in the mix. I guess the steeping/brewing time could also be a factor, but I don’t see that indicated here. I steeped 1 tablespoon mix in 3 1/2 cups water for 10 minutes and then addes 1 1/2 cups milk. Very spicey!
