I first came across this simple dessert in Austin at a food cart. It was such a delightfully simple and yet delicious treat that I’m surprised it’s taken me so many years to recreate it myself.

Making these frozen banana desserts is super easy – you basically only need some ripe bananas and some chocolate for dipping it into.

If you’re not aware of this, when bananas are frozen, they become very creamy in texture. So much so, that frozen bananas blended is often used as an easy dairy-free ice-cream substitute.

Step 1:

You’ll need a ripe banana and some popsicle sticks.

Step 2:

Peel the banana and chop into 3 equal lengths.

Step 3:

Stick a popsicle stick into each piece of banana lengthwise.

Step 4:

Place the banana pieces into the freezer for 1 hour to harden. This makes them harder but not solid (they’ll have a nice creamy texture). If you prefer very frozen bananas (so that the chocolate dip will harder on them), then freeze the banana pieces for 3+ hours.

Step 5:

After one hour is up, make the chocolate dip by melting some dark chocolate pieces. The mixture needs to be fairly liquidy, so I also added in some warmed coconut cream and melted coconut oil. Mix it well and don’t let it cool too much. Get the toppings ready as well as you’ll need to put everything together quickly before the chocolate mixture solidifies.

Step 6:

Dip each piece of banana in the chocolate mixture and then sprinkle on the toppings. Wait 1-2 minutes for the chocolate to solidify a bit as it cools on the cold banana. Then enjoy immediately. If you used bananas that were frozen solid then the chocolate mixture will harden to a crisp shell on the bananas.

This makes a fun dessert everyone can take part in making! Since bananas are high in sugar, we suggest 1/3 of a ripe banana as the serving size.

Paleo Frozen Bananas Dipped In Chocolate

  • Author: Louise Hendon
  • Prep Time: 5 minutes
  • Cook Time: 0 minutes
  • Total Time: 5 minutes
  • Yield: 3 servings 1x
  • Category: Dessert
  • Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe banana, chopped into 3 equal pieces (approx. 2 inches in length)
  • 2.5 oz (70 g) dark chocolate, melted
  • 1 Tablespoon coconut cream, heated
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil (optional)
  • 2 Tablespoons shredded coconut
  • 2 Tablespoons cacao nibs or chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Place a popsicle stick through each piece of banana so that it doesn’t go all the way through but is sufficient to hold it.
  2. Freeze the banana pieces for 1 hour.
  3. After 1 hour, melt the chocolate (you can do this in the microwave on a low heat setting or on the stove) and mix with hot coconut cream and melted coconut oil together in a small cup. This should form a pretty liquidy mixture.
  4. Remove the bananas from the freezer and quickly dip each piece of banana into the chocolate mixture. You can also use a spoon to drizzle the chocolate mixture over the banana.
  5. Then, using your hands or a spoon, sprinkle shredded coconut and whatever other toppings you want over the chocolate before it hardens.
  6. Wait 1-2 minutes for the chocolate to solidify a bit and then enjoy immediately.

Notes

While the prep for this recipe is only 5 minutes, you do need to place the bananas into the freezer for at least 1 hour.
