A smoothie is the perfect summer breakfast because all you need to do is collect the ingredients and blend them, no cooking required. The best summer smoothies are not only easy to make, they capture the taste of summer with their flavor. Just like this Paleo pina colada smoothie. This four ingredient smoothie couldn’t be easier to make and it combines tropical favorites like tart pineapple, creamy coconut, and fruity banana for a delightful taste of summer in every sip. So whether you’re trying to beat the heat in August or missing the sun in December, this summery smoothie is just what you are looking for.

What’s the Story With Pina Coladas?

The original pina colada is a mixed drink made with cream of coconut, pineapple juice, and rum. There are several stories of its origins but everyone agrees that it was invented in Puerto Rico. In fact, it has been named the official drink of Puerto Rico.

Though it began life as an alcoholic drink, the irresistible combo of pineapple and coconut has spread to many other treats from cakes to cookies, and of course smoothies. Our pina colada flavored smoothie swaps out the overly sweet cream of coconut for coconut milk and replaces pineapple juice with pineapple chunks, but the flavor and the tropical spirit of the original are alive and well!

Our Top Tips for Buying and Storing Bananas for Smoothies

  • Avoid buying fruits with noticeable soft spots or split peels. The best bananas are vivid yellow, and firm to the touch with no green or brown patches on the ends. This will allow them to ripen just right at home.
  • That being said, overly ripe bananas can certainly be used in smoothies. Just remember that the more ripe bananas are, the sweeter they taste.
  • Don’t be afraid to freeze bananas for use when they are at their best. You can freeze them whole or freeze them pre-cut, both will work for smoothies.
