Pizza frequently tops the list of America’s favorite foods, beating out such delicacies as hamburgers, steak, tacos, and pasta. Capture the flavor of your favorite pie in this paleo pizza meatballs recipe.

Sorry, but Most Pizza is Not Paleo

While these homemade meatballs are paleo, your average slice of pizza is certainly not. There can be a lot of issues.

First, the crust presents an issue. As you know, grain is not paleo, and that flour had to come from somewhere, right?

That’s not saying you can’t make a paleo pizza. In fact, you can find a plethora of recipes right here.

You just have to create a base that doesn’t involve grain-based flour.

Next, you have to consider the sauce. Many store-bought brands contain vegetable oils. It’s a really smart move to avoid these oils as much as possible.

They also often contain added sugar, which is unnecessary. It’s much better to make your own pizza sauce.

So to recap, most any pizza you pull out of a box is not going to be paleo.

How to Make a Mashup of Pizza and Meatballs

It’s one of those overarching life questions: What defines pizza? What are its unmistakable elements and essences that make it what it is?

There are a few distinguishing characteristics we can pull out to transfer the taste of pizza into a craveable meatball.

First, are olives. I don’t know about you, but I think of olives as a quintessential topping on an “everything” or veggie pizza. Make sure you take out the pits before adding them to the mix.

Basil is also closely linked to pizza. Even walking through a garden, smelling fresh basil takes my mind right to pizza.

The sauce, of course, is another must-have reference to actual pizza. In this recipe, you’ll make it to top the meatballs.

Finally, onion and bacon are also common pizza toppers that help link these meatballs to pizza.
