Eating Out Paleo – Review of The Restaurant at the Rosedale, Portree, Isle of Skye, Scotland

Louise | July 26

It’s often tough figuring out what to eat when you’re on vacation, and I’ve definitely had to put up with non-Paleo food or fasting on vacation before. However, Scotland has been pretty easy to stay Paleo!

My parents came to visit us in Edinburgh a few weeks ago, and we drove up to the Isle of Skye for a quick weekend tour. Not only was the scenery absolutely amazing (take a look at the some of the photos below), but the food was superb too!

We didn’t make any reservations or do any research – many of the B&Bs and restaurants were all fully booked, so we just wandered into the Restaurant at the Rosedale Hotel because they had a table free.

My Top 7 Paleo Diet Tips That Save You Time

Louise | July 17

I’ve been Paleo for quite a while now (3 years pretty strictly and many years on and off before that). But I’m still learning! I’m still learning about what works for my body, new facts (sometimes murky ones) about nutrition and Paleo, and how to do Paleo more efficiently and effectively (aka faster!). After all, there are only 24 hours in a day and I gotta get that 8-hour beauty sleep in!

So, here are some Paleo diet tips that I learned the hard way, and I’m sharing these with you so you don’t have to make the mistakes I did (please share your tips in the comments below).

Honey Mustard Chicken Thighs by The Paleo Kitchen

Louise | July 10

I’ve been a fan of George’s (Civilized Caveman Cooking) and Juli’s (PaleOMG) sites for a long time, and so I was really excited when they decided to work together on a cookbook, The Paleo Kitchen.

They posted one of their delicious recipes (Cinnamon Chocolate Swirl Banana Bread) from The Paleo Kitchen here a few months ago, and I know a lot of people emailed me because they loved the recipe. So, I went and tested one of their recipes for dinner last night. It was one of the really easy ones (because I’m currently limited to the stuff they sell in a Tesco Express – a tiny supermarket in Edinburgh).

Paleo Friendly Restaurants in NYC – Hu Kitchen

Paleo Friendly Restaurants in NYC – Hu Kitchen

While there are many Paleo friendly restaurants in NYC, there aren’t many places where you can just order pretty much blindly anything off the menu and still be overjoyed at eating delicious and Paleo food! Hu Kitchen, on 5th Avenue, is the only place in NYC where the entire menu is pretty much Paleo (from the cooking oils to the no-grains)!

I know the name sounds like some random Chinese restaurant, but the Hu actually stands for Human, and they don’t serve any Chinese food!

Well Fed Cookbook Book Review

Louise | June 3

Book Title:
Well Fed: Paleo Recipes for People Who Love to Eat

Author: Melissa Joulwan

This is a delicious Paleo cookbook filled with amazing photos and flavors from across the world.

What makes the Well Fed cookbook special?

I love traveling and trying food from different cuisines, and Melissa’s book takes me to exotic places without even leaving my kitchen! There’s Chinese BBQ pork, El Minzah Orange Salad, Sri Lankan Curry Sauce, and more. You can travel the world with this book.

My favorite recipe from the Well Fed cookbook:

Chocolate Chili

Something Extra:

I love books that do something extra – beyond what you expect! And in Well Fed, this “something extra” is the annotations on the photos. There are all sorts of handy tips like using bottled lemon juice for making mayo as well as intimate facts e.g., Melissa’s first tattoo was inspired by Moroccan henna.

You can purchase the book on Amazon here.

Reinventing the Wheel: From Food Truck to Paleo Wagon

Jeremy | June 2

This is a guest post by Julie Arnan, who is a freelance writer and journalist who lives in Seattle, Washington. Julie also loves photography and food.

Donuts, waffles, fries, and sliders.

Sugar, grains…and more sugar and grains. These are the common staples of food trucks all over the US.

In the trenches, though, a few food-truck cooks and owners are starting to push back.

The Paleo Food Truck Renaissance

In Indianapolis, Shelby Malaterre worked in the food industry for almost 10 years before going Paleo himself and then starting the Caveman Truck.

In Portland, Heather and Joe’s Cultured Caveman food truck got so popular that they opened a second one.

And that’s just the beginning.

Are Coconut Aminos Paleo?

Jeremy | May 23

Savory, salty and a delicious flavor enhancer for a variety of dishes, coconut aminos are made from raw coconut tree sap and sea salt, then naturally aged.

It’s also a fermented product.

Used as a substitute for both soy sauce & tamari, as well as Worcestershire sauce, even a few dashes can deepen the flavors of many kinds of foods, from soups to egg dishes to stir-fries.  The soy-free sauce also contains 17 different amino acids and is low on the glycemic index.

While a relatively small amount of this sauce is used, the amino acids it contains can rebuild and repair muscle tissue, as well as enhance the immune system and increase our energy.

Did our Paleolithic ancestors take the time (or have the knowledge) to make coconut aminos?

Are Sprouts Paleo?

Jeremy | May 9

Sprouts can come from a variety of foods, including legumes, veggies, grains or nuts.  This can be confusing when questioning their Paleo-friendliness, as a “sprout” can basically come from anything that has a seed.

What You Should Know About Sprouts

Before you sprinkle those tasty salad toppers, carefully consider the source.

When grains are sprouted, the seed germinates and a chute comes out of the seed. This chute becomes the sprout that is cut off and consumed, as opposed to eating the seed (in contrast to whole grains and wheat flours that incorporate the seed proteins and starches into the milling process).

Once the seed is sprouted, the concentration of lectin (the substance that protect the plant but can be harmful to the body)  is decreased within several days time and in several weeks’, levels drop to almost none.

Paleo Coconut Mayo Recipe

Louise | March 24

This mayo is delicious! It’s thick and creamy with a hint of coconut (due to the coconut oil used). Previously, I had made mayonnaise with olive oil, which gives a more yellow colored mayo (recipe here). This coconut mayo has a slight cream color, and it’s perfect for making ranch dressing with (ranch dressing recipe here).

Why Make Your Own Paleo Mayo?

Store-bought mayo generally contain non-Paleo oils (e.g., canola oil). [UPDATE – I’ve found this Paleo mayo brand to be excellent – it’s made with avocado oil and tastes really good – and you can buy it from Thrive Market online.]

So, instead of foregoing many delicious foods (like tuna salads, ranch dressing), I make my own Paleo mayo using Paleo oils (olive oil and coconut oil). It’s delicious and fresh!
