Is Avocado Oil Paleo?

Jeremy | November 1

What is Avocado Oil?

As the name suggest, this is simply the oil pressed from avocados. Originally, the oil was extracted for cosmetic uses (it gets absorbed by your skin very quickly), but now it’s become a popular cooking oil due to its health benefits and high smoke point (often over 400F or 200C).

Like most oils, extraction of the oil can result in a good unrefined form and in a bad refined form.

For use in cosmetics, extraction is done by chemical solvents to get a more refined oil. As the introduction a 2004 study stated:

“The residues left by such solvents represent a risk to the consumer’s health; also, the temperatures applied during the recovery process may destroy some of the nutrients in the oil.”

avocado paleoFor most food purposes, cold press techniques are now employed by most producers. This often involves putting large amounts of pressure on the avocado flesh to separate the oil from the water and the solids. However, it’s not a very high production process, which is why there are still inventors looking to improve the productiveness of the process.

And you can experience for yourself just how little oil comes out of one avocado with this do-it-yourself tutorial on how to extract avocado oil at home.

No Time To Cook Paleo? – My 3-Step System to Never Being Hungry No Matter How Busy You Are!

Louise | October 5

When Life Gets Hectic…

If you’re like me, then there are a lot of periods of your life when things get crazy hectic, and I mean really crazy hectic!

During those periods (e.g., finals at school, when all your kids are suddenly at home during the summer, or when work is overbearing), what you eat becomes less of a concern as Everything Else takes over!

I definitely recall that when my workload at the law firm increased, my diet would take a dramatic turn for the worse (let’s not even talk about my sleep and exercise!). Suddenly, the vending machine would unceasingly call my name and every dish on every take-out menu would make my mouth water.

I thought those stressful times were over when I quit the law firm life a month ago, but then the wedding planning kicked in. I’m sure anyone who has ever planned their own wedding will sympathize with me when I say that the week leading up to the wedding was definitely a bit stressful (and that’s a huge understatement)!

And to have to cook during that week for the entire family?? Hell, NO!

Thankfully, I had a system in place already which made eating healthy and Paleo for that week a breeze, and I’m going to share with you that amazing 3-step system in this post.

And don’t worry, I’m not just giving you some general fluff advice like “remember to plan your meals in advance” – these are concrete step-by-step details!

What do you eat if you don’t eat bread? – My Paleo Wedding Menu

Louise | September 24

I hate how some people think that Paleo is not delicious to eat.

Have you ever had people ask you: “What do you eat if you don’t eat bread?”

I get asked this a lot, and my reaction is usually a fake laugh while inside my head, I’m thinking “ARE YOU CRAZY??”

But they’re not crazy, because we’re so bombarded by the food industry with crappy food that we forget what truly good food really is. One of my first reactions to Paleo many moons ago was: “What can you eat if there’s no cereal for breakfast, sandwich for lunch, and pasta for dinner?”

I was faced again with this issue when planning my wedding (which is this Saturday). I have 60 non-Paleo family and friends attending, and they’re probably all wondering “ARE THEY GOING TO SERVE ME JUST BACON AND SWEET POTATOES?” (That’s a pretty delicious image, but not really wedding style.)

So, I had to go in search of a caterer who would cook a scrumptiously delicious and visibly beautiful wedding meal. Many of you probably think that was seriously difficult. After all, it’s hard to even find a single Paleo restaurant to eat at!

But it was surprisingly not hard at all, and Joshua Charles is the man who is making my wedding so special. I can’t thank him and Marian enough for making our Paleo Wedding dream become reality. (His team is even going to cook EVERYTHING in olive oil, coconut oil, or butter/ghee!)

In case you don’t believe me, here is the menu and some photos from the tasting (courtesy of my good friends, Caroline and Wayne, who did the tasting in California for us while we were still in NYC).

Are You Eating the Right Type of Celery? – Heart, Root, or Seeds?

Louise | August 15

Isn’t Celery Just Celery?

I was actually really lucky growing up – my mum cooked a lot, and so I got to know common fruits and vegetables (and even some exotic ones) pretty well. However, I have to admit, I was was really confused when it came to celery. I had eat celery plenty as a kid, but I had always called it “celery.” So what the heck were hearts and roots?

<h3What’s the difference between Celery, Celery Heart, and Celery Root?

Eat Out Like a Paleo Pro: 18 Tips To Make Your Life Easier (+ Downloadable Book)

Jeremy | July 22

Imagine if you had a home chef who would cook every single meal for you, make it delicious, and also keep it 100% Paleo…

Would you ever fail to eat completely healthy and Paleo food in that situation?

But of course, most of us don’t have a personal chef (I certainly don’t), and because of that, we often end up eating out. A LOT.

Over 40% of Americans eat at a fast food restaurant at least once per week. And that’s just fast food – not even counting regular restaurants which are rarely healthier or more Paleo. And if you weren’t worried enough about American eating habits, over 10 billion donuts are consumed every year.

If you’re looking for some Paleo restaurant reviews, check out this list of restaurants we’ve reviewed.

How Cooking Oil is Making You Crazy, Fat, and Dead – 4 Healthy Ways to Improve Any Food

Jeremy | July 15

There is a way to potentially prevent 99.9% of bipolar disorders in the world.

This same method could also potentially prevent more than 25% of all cardiovascular deaths.

Those estimates are probably high, and yet here’s what is most striking about this potential solution:

1. It’s easy.

2. Almost nobody thinks that any potential harm would result.

So pardon me if I’m a bit flabbergasted at why this isn’t getting just a little bit more attention.

Are Green Beans Paleo?

Jeremy | June 24

I was a really good kid. No kidding. I slept anytime and anywhere as a baby, I was a star student, and I never really got into much trouble.

But yeah – in some ways, I was also a nightmare. For instance, trying to get me to eat vegetables or do pretty much anything that I didn’t like was almost impossible. Or at least very painful for whoever was trying (usually my mom).

Oddly, though, I liked green beans. I honestly can’t remember another vegetable that I liked.

Fast-forward – I’m Paleo now and eat a much wider variety of veggies and other foods than I did when I was a kid. (As an aside, it’s now me who tries to get my mom to eat vegetables. Oh the irony…)

In any event, today’s post is dedicated to that one vegetable that I actually did like as a kid…

Paleo Beef Curry

“My doctor told me to stop having intimate dinners for four. Unless there are three other people.”

This is one of my favorite quotes, and I decided to follow the good doctor’s advice by having an intimate dinner for four – yep, there were really three other people there!

Endives and Pear Saute Recipe

Louise | April 8

I’ve often had endives at high-end restaurants as part of an appetizer or salad. It has a nice crunch and a slight bitterness that makes it a refreshing start to a meal. Of course, I couldn’t be content with just making a salad…so I decided to go for a stir-fry with fresh pears and garlic.

A Vegetarian Paleo Meal

Louise | December 9

Vegetarian?!? I can almost hear the scorn in some of your voices! Yes, it was vegetarian without a meat dish in sight, although I had originally planned to make a liver pate (but the liver went into the chilli instead). Plus, I wanted to dispel the notion that I only eat steak – that’s just in my dreams!

Microwaved Paleo Bread

First, if you haven’t tried making this microwaved Paleo bread, then you should do it now! It takes around 5 minutes to mix all the ingredients together, and then 90 seconds in the microwave on high. It’s a touch dry, but hey for all of 6.5 minutes of work, it’s not bad (especially if you spread some Paleo jam or a bit of honey on it). It also works well toasted a little (because it’s a bit dry to begin with). The recipe for it is here.
