The Ultimate Paleo Diet Food List [+Infographics]

Jeremy | June 12

Eating Paleo is actually pretty simple.

Eat foods that our caveman ancestors might have eaten 1,000,000 years ago. But as simple as that sounds, it’s not always obvious whether a food existed that long ago.

And more importantly, that’s only a starting point. It makes sense that a food will probably be safe and healthy if it has been eaten for a million years, but newer foods definitely could also be healthy.

Ultimate Paleo Diet Food ListSo to make going Paleo as easy as possible, I’ve put together this Paleo Diet Food List.

Use the table of contents below to help you navigate through this comprehensive list of Paleo foods. I hope it helps you quickly and easily determine which foods should be added into (or deleted from) your diet.

3 Things to Keep In Mind About This Paleo Diet Food List

  1. Other Paleo food lists might be different. Many lists haven’t been updated in ages, so they rely on outdated science and myth. This list is based on the most up-to-date understanding of each of these foods.Even so, it’s certainly possible to disagree that certain foods should or should not be eaten on a Paleo diet. For instance, potatoes are a big source of disagreement (Loren Cordain says no to them in his book, The Paleo Diet, but many other Paleo experts now think potatoes are not all that different to sweet potatoes). You’re never going to get complete agreement, but this list of foods to eat on a Paleo diet is an excellent place to start.
  2. This list should be customized for your particular body and life. If you’re diabetic and severely obese, then you probably shouldn’t be eating hardly any potatoes, sweet potatoes, or anything else that spikes your blood sugar, at least not until you get your blood sugar under control. On the other hand, if you’re 25 years old and incredibly active, you might need to eat a lot more sweet potato and taro.
  3. If you have specific goals, specific allergies, or specific diseases, then one or more of these foods may not make sense. If you want to lose weight, cut out almost all nuts for a while. If you’ve got irritable bowel syndrome, even berries may not be a good idea. And if you have autoimmune conditions, then you might need to avoid a lot of Paleo diet foods (including eggs, nuts, seeds, peppers and other nightshades). Those sorts of personalized plans are not covered in this list because there are just too many possibilities.

5 REAL Reasons to Go Paleo

Jeremy | June 11

why go paleoI was talking to some folks yesterday who generally knew a little bit about Paleo diets.  They were very curious, and so we got into a discussion.

It was an excellent discussion, since these people were smart, nice, curious, open-minded, and willing to offer their opinions.  (I hate it when folks are EITHER unwilling to listen or, conversely, unwilling to contribute anything meaningful to a conversation.  You gotta do both, folks.)

But like in most conversations I have with people who haven’t read a whole lot about Paleo, they had heard various things about Paleo diets and lifestyles from friends and colleagues.

And it occurred to me that one of the biggest sources of confusion about Paleo diets is WHY.  That is, why call it Paleo, why look to our ancestors, why eat this way, etc.

It’s Not About Nostalgia
Neither I nor 99% of people who are Paleo want to live in caves.  It’s not appealing AT ALL.

I love my technology (within reason), I think modern medicine is fantastic, and I can’t imagine giving up electricity.

Most importantly, I don’t want to eat just like my ancestors from a million years ago.  That is not the reason to be Paleo.

Salted Duck Eggs Recipe

Louise | May 29

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, then keep reading, because these are delicious!

What are salted duck eggs?

The photo above shows my own homemade salted duck eggs, but you can actually buy them from some Chinese grocery stores too. It’s duck eggs aged in brine, which makes the yolks turn oily, slightly salty, and amazingly delicious! And it’s really easy to make at home as I’ll explain.

Paleo Mu Shu Pork

Louise | May 14

Mu shu pork (also known as moo shu, moo shi, or mu xu) is a traditional northern Chinese dish typically served with little pancakes (especially in American-Chinese restaurants).

The traditional dish typically has wood ear mushrooms, eggs, some form of meat, bamboo shoots and day lily buds. The wood ear mushrooms and the day lily buds were a bit too hard for me to go and find (i.e., they weren’t in my local grocery store), and so I used shiitake mushrooms and napa cabbage as substitutes. Instead of the pancakes, I used lettuce leaves, although honestly, the dish tastes pretty damn good just by itself!

Why Soy is the Worst Kind of Legume

Jeremy | May 10

soy beansIf there is any legume I’d avoid above all others, it would probably be soy (with peanuts being a close 2nd). For why you should be avoiding all legumes, read this article.

If you’re unfamiliar with soy, it starts off life as a cream-colored bean, which can then be made into a variety of foods like tofu, soy milk, soy protein, tempeh, soy sauce, imitation cheese, etc. It’s popular in many Asian dishes and among vegetarians and vegans as a protein source.

There are a variety of reasons for why soy should be avoided:

10 Reasons to Avoid Eating Legumes [+ Infographic]

Jeremy | May 9

Have you ever stopped to reflect on the ways that we talk about beans?

Take the most famous beans in history, for example…

Young Jack was on his way to town to sell his family’s only cow, when a stranger talked him into trading the cow for a handful of “magic” beans. When Jack got back home, his mother was so furious about having only the worthless beans, that she threw them out the window. (The rest of that story took a more fantastic twist, of course.)

And even today, you might off-handedly note that something isn’t worth a “hill of beans,” indicating that it’s practically worthless.

However, if you spend 2 minutes on Google right now, you can find hundreds of articles about the health virtues of beans. Many sites praise their nutritional value, their high-fiber content, their ability to help prevent cancer, and even the amount of protein you can get from legumes.

They’re such darlings in the vegetarian and vegan world that you might think beans actually lead to bags of gold, golden-egg-laying hens, and magical harps.

And yet, you’re Paleo. You avoid legumes at all costs. Are you missing out???

Btw, if you want to find out more about Paleo, check out this article on the Paleo diet here. And if you’re confused by what is and what isn’t Paleo, you can find a comprehensive list of Paleo foods here.

8 Major Reasons To Avoid Wheat

Jeremy | May 9

paleo why wheat is badOne of the cornerstones of Paleo and gluten-free diets is not eating wheat. If you’re already Paleo, then you might have even noticed some of the benefits from giving up wheat (like feeling less bloated and perhaps even shedding some weight).

But what exactly is it about wheat that makes it so bad? Here are just 8 of the most important reasons why you should be avoiding wheat:
